Meet Our Ambassador Teachers

It’s back to school time and we’re welcoming new ambassador teachers to the US! These educators have traveled from all over the world to share their culture in their new communities. We picked them up from the airport, walked them through the process of teaching in the U.S. during a week of orientation, and even threw them a welcome party where they showed us how they dance back home! Here are several of their stories.

Name: Mark Kerr

Where are you from? Ireland

Why did you become a teacher?

I had several teachers who were influential to me. Having those positive role models at school inspired me to become a teacher as well.

Why did you decide to teach in the US?

I had an opportunity to work with kids during summer camp in Indiana where I worked alongside elementary school teachers. I decided to teach here because I am intrigued by the US education system.

What are you most looking forward to in this new opportunity?

I’m excited to collaborate with staff that are familiar with this education system. I want to learn different ways of approaching education.

What are you nervous about?

I’m not really nervous. I want to give everything a go. I know I need to work hard and I'm excited to get started.

How do you hope to impact your students as an ambassador teacher?

I think I’ll bring an emphasis on global learning. I've worked in several contexts in different countries. I want to share my experiences but I am also ready to learn from the students.

Name: Sharee Silvera

Where are you from? Jamaica

Why did you become a teacher?

My mom encouraged me to try early childhood teaching so I went to teacher's college and now I’m here!

Why did you decide to teach in the US?

An advertisement popped up on my Facebook page. I had several friends who encouraged me to apply to the program. I am always looking for new opportunities to learn and teach. America has a lot to offer.

What are you most excited for?

I can’t wait to see what the children will teach me.

What are you nervous about?

I'm nervous about the transition, I hope my students trust me.

How do you hope to impact your students as an ambassador teacher?

I think their natural curiosities will cause them to want to learn about Jamaica. It can make such an impact in the world. Jamaica is a melting pot of the world.

Name: Shauni Moore

Where are you from? Scotland

Why did you become a teacher?

I was interested in environmental science. I’m an outdoorsy person so I love bringing my classroom outside.

Why did you decide to teach in the US?

I had just finished two years of teaching somewhere else and decided that it was time to move on. I applied for this job and went for it! I also have family in South Carolina.

What are you most looking forward to in this new opportunity?

I’ve already been in contact with my school and they seem like a family. I’m looking forward to after school activities and a tight knit community. I’m excited to experience the culture here.

What are you nervous about?

I’m worried about driving on the other side of the road and making friends here.

How do you hope to impact your students as an ambassador teacher?

I hope my students are intrigued with my background and my travel. I brought a lot of things from Scotland for show and tell! I also want to get my students paired up with international pen pals.

Name: Kennia Fuentes

Where are you from? Honduras

Why did you become a teacher?

I became a teacher’s aid after I graduated high school. The principal encouraged me to continue with teaching.

Why did you decide to teach in the US?

I love being part of a bigger community. We are citizens of the world. We need to go out in the world, have new experiences, and take on challenges.

What are you most excited for?

I am excited to have experiences with the kids. I can’t wait to be immersed in the culture as I grow with my students and get to know them.

What are you nervous about?

I am nervous about standardized testing and communicating with parents.

How do you hope to impact your students as an ambassador teacher?

I hope they have a desire to learn. I want to make them curious and inspire creativity.
