Adapted from materials provided by Language Testing International (LTI)
AAPPL, or the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Language, is the assessment used by Participate Learning to monitor student progress in language acquisition in 2nd, 5th, and 8th grades.
AAPPL tests students in up to four language components:
At 5th and 8th grades, all four components are tested. At 2nd grade, only the ILS component is tested.*
*After speaking with AAPPL representatives, our team was advised not to test the IL component in 2nd grade until it is available in Form E. Please contact our team if you would like to discuss further at dlteam@participatelearning.com.
AAPPL offers three forms of the assessment:
Participate Learning manages all assessment orders and will cover the cost of administration for the components tested. We will additionally provide retests for any components scored as ‘UR’, or unratable. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide retests for students that score in the ‘Above I-4’ range on Form A or ‘Below N-4’ on Form B.
In the full immersion model, 90 percent of instruction is delivered in Spanish, the target language.
In the 50/50 immersion model, instruction is balanced between the target language, Spanish, and English in equal parts.
