What Is International Day of Education, and Why Do We Celebrate It?

Celebrated on January 24, International Day of Education is an opportunity to recognize the vital role education plays in creating opportunities and fostering growth. As an organization dedicated to connecting the world through education, we prioritize learning as a means to improve outcomes for children globally. Read on to learn more about this important day and how you can help spread awareness.

What Is International Day of Education?

International Day of Education provides a chance to educate students and communities about the state of education worldwide while encouraging advocacy to improve access to learning opportunities. A foundational education empowers students, helps them achieve their goals, and prepares them for lifelong success.

The focus of this day is to ensure that education is accessible to all, providing students with the tools they need to thrive and make meaningful contributions to society.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Education

This year’s theme, Recover and Revitalize Education for the COVID-19 Generation, highlights the significant challenges students and educators have faced during the pandemic. School closures affected an estimated 90 percent of all students worldwide, reversing years of progress.

Although distance learning was implemented in many countries, access to online education was limited for more than 500 million students globally. In the United States, the pandemic revealed disparities between students with access to technology and those without, emphasizing the need to address educational gaps.

Spreading Awareness and Inspiring Action

What can we do to address these challenges and prioritize education? It begins with creating greater awareness and fostering collective efforts to make a difference.

Use International Day of Education as a platform to help students understand the barriers to learning that their peers around the world face. Here are some ways to engage students:

  • Explore Global Education: Introduce students to learning conditions in different parts of the world through classroom discussions and resource materials.
  • Themed Read-Alouds: Organize a global read-aloud featuring stories about students’ educational experiences worldwide. This helps students imagine life beyond their own and contextualize what they are learning.
  • Service Learning Projects: Encourage students to collect and donate books to local after-school programs or youth centers. This simple act supports literacy initiatives in your community.

Whatever activity you choose, emphasize the importance of education and inspire students to see how they can contribute to making it a reality for others.
